While the main point of the story of the prodigal son seems obvious to most Christians, we tend to overlook the fact that the plight of the older brother is often our own plight. God's grace is free, completely free. There are no works one CAN do, or works one MUST do, to enjoy the presence of the Father. His love is available and free. Stop doing. Stop striving. Enjoy the rest that God provides through His Son Jesus the Christ.
